Seattle & Me. What the hell was I thinking?

What is it about Seattle? Perhaps it’s the title of Hidden Gem it’s been wearing for so long. Tucked away in the Northern tips of our beautiful nation lies one of my most adored cities—Seattle, Washington. When I was first contemplating the move to Seattle from Los Angeles, I was met with nothing but laughter. “Why would you even consider leaving the sunshine behind for dreary days, and gloomy evenings?,” they all asked. The truth of it was I didn’t have a real reason for packing up my one bedroom apartment and driving the 19 hour road trip to my new home. For a girl who has planned her life so perfectly, and so appropriately up until now, this was beyond out of character.

However, something just felt right. I had only visited Seattle once prior to the decision, but that one visit called me back like an old friend from college. It’s as though I knew there were stories to hear, new fun moments to embrace, and a warm world of energy that I could truly feel home around. That was what Seattle had promised to me when I first met her only a few months ago. The rain, the traffic, the noise of this city seemed to be nothing more than a few hiccups in a beautiful song.

All I could think of was putting on a cute pea coat in the morning, some warm fuzzy boots and wandering around Belltown in hopes of the perfect latte. Seattle is a city of coffee lovers, of newspaper readers, of tech geeks. I wanted to be part of that world. I wanted to let it surround me and nothing was stopping me from trying something new.

It’s been a few weeks now, and although the rain has visited frequently, there is no doubt this city is the place my feet were meant to land. For now it is the perfect balance between a new adventure and an old memory I can’t wait to recall someday…

  1. Wow lady! I have never seen you write quite like this before. I love it! I am so glad that you are here in Seattle with me, but more than that I am glad that you were able to find a place where you felt comfortable and at home. I am lucky to have you here as you are one of my closest friends and Seattle is only a better place for it!

  2. Having moved from Seattle to LA and now considering a move back to Seattle, I completely understand. Seattle is a great town with so many awesome people it’s no wonder that you love it.

Glad you made the leap to come to Seattle. When I had decided to move to Seattle, I had never been. I just had a good friend already here, and that was enough for me. Yes it was a leap faith, but i love it here. I hope you grow to love it as much as I do. You’re site is looking great. Keep up the good work.

Of all the cities I’ve visited, Seattle is hands down the one I would/will move to. So many friendly people, but it’s *really* hard to find a native to Seattle.

When I was there for a conference in 2008, I spent 3 days hiking around Mt. Rainier. Highly recommend you visit in July/August when the flowers are blooming. It’s staggering.

Glad to see your new blog up and running, looking forward to more great stuff and you are now officially on my feed reader.

    Cheerio :D

Hey there Joanna! We’ve not met, Kyle Lacy forwarded your info to me via twitter. I found your blog and came across this wonderful gem you shared. I am moving to Seattle this month; what you wrote here resonates so much for me! After living in LA and the Midwest, and missing my family in NorCal – Seattle called to me about three years ago. Timing and all the rest have lined up and the road trip will begin in no time. I’ve been to Seattle twice and after the 2nd adventure it was clear it my new home. I can’t wait to grab a coffee and get to work on my long awaited novel. I look forward to reading more of your writing; have a great day!
